| FOX 47's HIGH SCHOOL YEARBOOK -- Highland |
|
Recently, Highland DECA held its annual Miracle Minute at Highland High School, raising $514.78 for Annie Heathcote, their MDA child. The money will be used to send Annie to a camp which is held each summer for children who suffer from muscular dystrophy. This is the second year Annie has been chosen to be sponsored by the Highland chapter.
Annie lives in Mazomanie, WI. She is eight years old and in the third grade. Annie loves to swim, fish, camp, cook with her mom, and play soccer. She loves her cats and her pet hamster, and she enjoys spending time with her brother and sister. Unfortunately, Annie suffers from Spinal Muscular Atrophy, which is a form of muscular dystrophy. Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a genetic, motor neuron disorder. It causes the lower motor neurons in a person's spinal cord to degenerate, which in turn causes the muscles to weaken and waste away.
At present, there is no cure for this disease, but there is hope. Scientific medical research is continual, and many feel confident that one day a cure will be found. In the meantime, it is hoped that through efforts such as those being made by Highland's DECA chapter and hundreds of other chapters around the country, children in Annie's situation can experience just a little more joy in their otherwise quite difficult lives.
(*In southwest Wisconsin, there are over 400 families living each day with neuromuscular disease.)
