On Thursday, October 18th, the Lake Mills L-Cats football team played the Waterloo Pirates. There was a strong promise of rain Thursday night, but overall the night proved for an excellent game. With the game being the final home game of the season for the L-Cats, all of the fans were hoping for a win, but even though the team put up a good fight, the L-Cats did not get that victory. Throughout the entire game, Lake Mills played evenly with Waterloo, but Waterloo was able to get ahead of the L-Cats in the second half.
The first quarter began strongly favoring the L-Cats. Jake Day ran the initial kick-off all the way down the field. Even though Lake Mills was unable to score on this drive, they soon recovered a Pirate fumble, and scored the first touchdown of the game. Lake Mills led the Pirates throughout the entire first quarter, but within seconds of the second quarter, the Pirates tied up the score. After the Waterloo touchdown, the teams were able to hold each other back from scoring, until Lake Mills was able to score another touchdown with a quick pass. Then, with just a few minutes until half time, Waterloo was able to score again. Lake Mills was able to block the extra point attempt, and the first half ended 14-13, Waterloo.
The second half played out in the same manner as the first with neither of the teams being able to score. Lake Mills was close to the end zone multiple times, but the Pirates were always able to stop them. Late in the third quarter, the Pirates scored yet another touchdown, but went for the two point conversion, and was unable to score, therefore making the score 19-14, Waterloo. The score remained the same throughout the rest of the game, and ended with a Waterloo victory.
Both teams played extremely well on Thursday night. Even though Lake Mills ended up losing the game, the team was able to recover fumbles, force interceptions, and even block a kick-off. For the final home game of the season, Lake Mills played extremely well, but was just unable to beat Waterloo.
