| FOX 47's HIGH SCHOOL YEARBOOK -- Deerfield |
|
It had been cold, way colder than it had been the week before. People stood in the stands as the announcer announced the soccer team. The junior class had concessions, and I made frequent trips up there to support my class.
The hot chocolate was a little watery, but it was hot, and I sipped it as I eagerly watched the game. The other team dribbled the ball downfield and shot. A defender had kicked the ball out of bounds; the other team had just gotten a corner kick. The player crossed the ball in front of the goal; it was the most amazing cross I’d ever seen from a high school team. Then someone kicked the ball into the goal, past Brad Konkel, into the net.
The score was now one to zero, and we needed to play together more. It was hard to get anywhere on offense because anytime Clayton Miles dribbled the ball downfield he had five defenders on him so he couldn’t see anyone to pass to.
Every time we got downfield, there were five defenders on the person who had the ball. The stands got persistently colder as I sat there.
Finally I decided that it was too cold for me, so I left. The score was two to zero, and the other team was winning.
I later learned that the final score was three to one, and we had lost. But, at least we scored a goal.
