On Saturday, January 4, the Lake Mills ladies basketball team played a well-fought game against the Lakeside Warriors. The basketball game was rescheduled for Saturday after being called off due to a snow day. Even with the game being rescheduled for the weekend, the Lakeside gym was definitely packed with plenty of dedicated fans. Players from both of the teams did not disappoint the fans, as the game proved very exciting.
During the first quarter, neither Lake Mills nor Lakeside pulled ahead with a large lead. The score continued to bounce back and forth between the two teams, but during the second quarter, Lakeside started to dominate. The Lakeside girls were able to pull ahead of the L-Cats by ten points, and continued to stay in the lead until half time.
After half time and deep into the third quarter, Lakeside continued to hold unto the lead. The L-Cats were not going to give up without a strong fight though. They continued to cut down on Lakeside's lead, but were not able to gain the lead in the third quarter. The L-Cats really hit their stride during the fourth quarter, as they were able to capture the lead from Lakeside. Lakeside had many fouls during the fourth quarter, which helped to enable the L-Cats to gain many points from free throws. In addition, Deny Herring hit many three-point shots at crucial points in the fourth quarter, which enabled the L-Cats to begin to pull ahead of Lakeside.
The winner of the basketball game was undecided until the last few minutes of the game. With around three minutes left of the game, Lake Mills pulled ahead, and soon Lakeside was down by ten points, and unable to win the game. Lakeside fought hard until the very end though, as they continued to foul the L-Cats, even though the L-Cats were able to capitalize from the fouls, as Carol Cayo hit many of her free throws. The game ended with an L-Cat win, and a final score of 56 to 43.
