On February 2, 2008 the Eastside Lakers’ hockey team faced a matchup between the cross town rivals, Monona Grove. The game was a consolation game held at the Groundhog Tournament, the tournament consisted of the teams, Sun Prairie, Monona Grove, Kettle Moraine, and the Eastside Lakers. This was a much anticipated matchup since the beginning of the season, because one of Monona Groves’ player was a former player from the Eastside Lakers, his name is Kolton Jones. Both of the teams lost a close game the night previous to this one and both of these teams did not want to go home empty handed, they both wanted a win.
The game started off very well for Monona Grove because they were holding an unforgiving strangle on our defense which ultimately lead to Monona Groves’ first goal of the game which was scored by Jordan Lemanski. With that first goal the Lakers knew what they were dealing with and this was a team that came ready to play. With this in hand the Lakers could have worked even harder to get that one goal back but with less than a minute later Monona Grove scored again, and this would then crush all hope that the Lakers had because they were getting outperformed in every possible category. At the end of the first period the score was in favor of Monona Grove 4-0.
At the start of the second period the Lakers began to play a little better but all the momentum would be crushed when Kolton Jones scored a shorthanded goal 3 minutes and 3 seconds into the start of the period. On the next faceoff Monona Grove won the faceoff and they eventually took it into the Lakers zone and they eventually scored another goal. After that goal the Lakers had no choice but to pull their starting goalie, Tony Ales, and they put in their backup goalie, Christian Delatorre. Christian played well until Monona Grove received a power play and they then capitalized on the power play. Eventually the period ended with a score 10-0. To say the least it was a poor performance and most definitely a season low for the Lakers.
At the start of the third period the Lakers already knew that they were defeated and all they had to do was try to have fun because that’s all that they could do. Unfortunately the Lakers did not score to ruin the shutout of Monona Grove’s goalie, Tony Statz. But Monona grove did manage to get three more goals, and that lead to the final score of 13-0. This was a horrible performance by the Lakers and they walked away with two losses in two days and it turned out to be a horrible weekend when they had high expectations in the tournament.
