FOX47 NEWS - False Fire Alarms At UW Dorm
What does it sound like?
It's the most ungodly sound in the entire world!
It's annoying..it's loud.
What these UW Madison students are describing isn't your typical alarm clock.
In fact it's a malfunctioning fire alarm system that has been going off all semester in the Witte dorms downtown.. forcing students to evacuate their rooms.
And never at a convenient hour either.
3:30 in the morning, I'm trying to get to sleep, one at 6:30 that wasn't too bad, but it's annoying, says Witte resident Jordan Listenbee.
With finals going on- some students say it has made studying difficult and some cases has kept some from getting to class.
The fire alarm goes off and you stand outside and when it's time to go to class you can't go up and get your books, says resident Kalie Becker.
Students say the alarm has gone off at least five times within the last two weeks.
It's gotten to the point where people don't even want to come outside anymore and it's kind of like a cry wolf kind a thing I mean if there is a time where there is an actual fire, people aren't going to go outside because of all of this, Becker says.
UW police Lieutenant Peter Ystenes says false alarm or not, students need to evacuate.
These fire alarm systems have been put in place for their own safety and anytime they hear the fire alarm they should exit the building and seek safety outside, Ystenes says.
UW Housing director Paul Evans says they believe they have the problem fixed.
Many students hope that's the case, because if the problem continues- it could mean residents staying in their rooms during an actual emergency.
Evans says there have been fifteen fire alarm incidents since the semester started.
He says only six of those were false alarms, four of them were pranks and five were actual incidents.
Evans says the five fire events were minor incidents such as burnt pop corn.
He says crews were in today double checking to see if the system was working properly.
