FOX47 NEWS - Car Pile Up: More Than 50 People Taken To Madison Area Hospitals
U-W hospital is Madison's only level one trauma center which means people with the more serious injuries from Sunday's massive car pile up were at the U-W ER.
As of 7:00pm Sunday, there were eight people in the hospital's emergency room.
One in critical condition and the other seven were listed as serious.
None of the names or ages of those injured individuals have been released.
Hospital spokesperson Lisa Brunette says they activated their command center.
What that means is they have called an administrator in and kept extra staff from earlier today on board to help with the influx of patients.
Brunette says it's possible more patients could come through the hospital's ER, and if they do-they're ready.
We have a lot of staff on hand if they're needed and we drill for situations just like this. So it really isn't hectic, it's a very controlled atmosphere, so we're waiting to see if we'll get additional patients or not, Brunette says.
Saint Mary's Hospital says they have seen around 20 patients who were involved in this afternoon's accident.
Majority of those people suffered minor injuries and most have already been discharged.
Officials there say they are working with the Red Cross to make sure that everyone has a place to stay tonight.
Meriter Hospital had ten people in their ER and could get more.
Meriter spokesperson Mae Knowles says all patients seemed really shaken up from Sunday afternoon's massive car pile up.
Knowles says one patient told her that a semi- drove over their car.
