FOX47 NEWS - 9/11 Anniversary: Marine Returns From Iraq
For a family in Sauk City, this year's 9-11 anniversary is a very good day.
A marine arrived at Dane County Regional Airport Thursday night and reunited with his family, after spending almost a year in Iraq.
The homecoming was a complete surprise to Michael Wenger. He stepped of the plane to a cheering crowd and patriotic music.
Wenger first joined the service in 1971. He came out of retirement when he heard his unit, the 2nd Battalion 24th Marine Corps, would be headed overseas.
You develop a lot of loyalty and I really believe in being a marine, and what it takes to keep the nation safe and secure, he said.
Wenger worked as a communications specialist, relaying intelligence to marines patrolling the streets of Iraq.
The other marines in Wenger's company returned home last month. His discharge took longer because he had to reapply for retirement.
Wenger plans to meet his grandson for the first time. His daughter gave birth this week.
