Developers say a public market in Madison would create 300 new jobs and showcase Wisconsin agriculture.

They described the project as a vibrant and permanent farmers market.

Developers said the public market would allow customers to interact more with local vendors.

It would offer a variety of products, local food, it will have flowers, chocolates, could have a couple small restaurants, cafes as part of it, said Marianne Morton, Executive Director of Commonwealth Development, Inc.

Developers are recommending building the marketplace on the Brayton parking lot near capitol square. They say it's big enough, and could be a central destination.

According to estimates, the Madison public market would cost up to $19 million.

It would be paid for using private and public funds. Up next is the design phase -- developers plan to work on that over the next four months.
