FOX 47 - Road Trippin'
MOUNT HOREB- Fall is here and we're hitting the road looking for a little fun. We went about 30 minutes west of Madison to a little town who likes to poke a fun at their heritage.
The 7000 people who call Mount Horeb home know they live among a few special village residents and it's those special friends that bring thousands of tourists to the quaint little town every year.
They don't speak, they're sneaky and will win a stare down every time. Sometimes you can't even tell the visitors from the fairytale trolls that call Mount Horeb home.
"We celebrate mostly our Norwegian heritage, but we celebrate other heritages, German, Irish, we take them all, especially trolls, said Melissa Theisen, Mount Horeb Area Chamber of Commerce.
The head troll, if you will, "Jorgen" greeted us for a personal Trollway Tour. Before you head out plot your trek then set out in search for the 25 trolls that call Mount Horeb home.
Lots of shopping and specialty restaurants greet visitors along a very cute main street and the whole town gets in on the act.
A gathering place for the town is the special little chocolate shop, Sjolinds. In just a few short years after opening regulars and tourists flock to the shop for Swedish treats baked fresh each day and specialty confections.
"My wife and i both believe that a place where people can gather is intregal to a healthy community and we're very appreciative to have the opportunity to help people with that."
Thompson said his wife, Tacy modeled the shop after a Viennese chocolate house and now it's a family affair with the magic happening downstairs. The team includes plans to branch out to start producing thei own chocolate, something not done very often.
"We do what we call bean to bar chocolate, said Thompson. We take the cocoa bean, grind it, roast it and turn it into actual chocolate."
If it's yummy chocolate and cakes, or a little fun hanging with new friends you can guarantee the villagers of Mount Horeb will make sure you leave with a smile on your face. One of Mount Horeb's premier events, The Fall Heritage Festival is October 5 and 6.
