MADISON (WMSN) -- Heart disease in the number one killer of Americans, but there are four things you can do to decrease your chances of dying from heart attack or stroke.



1 - Don't smoke

2 - Have a body mass index (bmi) lower than 25

3 - Eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day

4 - Exercise vigorously for at least 2 ½ hours per week.



Doctors say if you live by these four rules for 20 years or more, it will lower your risk of heart attack and stroke by 87%. Living this healthy lifestyle for any amount of time will decrease your chance of dying of heart attack or stroke.
