MADISON (WMSN) -- More mothers are skipping the run to the hospital to give birth.
According to the CDC in the past 4 years, the number of home births has gone up 20%.
Wisconsin ranks 5th in the nation.
"I just progressed so quickly we just decided to stay there and have it in the tub," said Madison mom Emma Leeson.
For Emma Leeson - she prefers this over the hospital.
She says giving birth to her baby girl Dorian felt more natural at home, because she felt in control.
"At the hospital, as soon as you start pushing like 5 strangers come in the room to observe. Having had her here where everybody in the room was someone I invited personally," said Emma.
Her husband Michael says he felt very involved in this birth.
"It feels like birth is a health issue where as at home this was a celebration," said Michael Leeson.
"I've had births in teepees, mansions, tiny apartments," said Ingrid Andersson, Certified Nurse Midwife.
Andersson says home births put the woman at the center of the experience, allowing them to choose where they want to give birth.
"A lot of women are most comfortable in the bathroom because its a private cave like retreat," said Andersson.
Ingrid says its important to make sure the midwife you choose thinks about safety.
"We carry oxygen, IV and anti-hemmorage all those things identical to the hospital except it looks different because we're in the kitchen or bathroom," said Andersson.
Ingrid adds midwives need to have a strong relationship with area hospitals.
