MADISON (WMSN) -- A Madison patient is sharing her fight against skin cancer, and how you can prevent it from happening to you.
36-year-old Kierstin Kloeckner says she noticed skin changes on her shoulders, back and face two years ago.
It turned out she had basil cell carcinoma - a form of skin cancer.
Kierstin says it's important to stay in tune with your body - especially if you have a family history of skin cancer like her.
Her dermatologist - Dr. Bob McDonald says your skin is a window for what's going on inside your body.
He says it's important to cover up when you go outside, and it's important to do a self exam of your skin every week.
"The best exam is your exam because nobody cares more about your skin than you do," said Dr. Bob McDonald, Dean West Clinic Dermatologist.
The doctor adds many people don't realize the sun plays a huge role for the health of your skin.
He says most of his patients don't realize rosacea, which causes blotchy red spots on the face, is caused by over-exposure from the sun.
