MADISON (WMSN) -- If you have trouble sleeping, you're not alone.
According to the CDC, about 1 in 3 adults suffer from some type of sleep disorder in the U.S.
"I would wake up every 5 to 10 minutes," said sleep patient Clare Sessler.
64-year-old Clare Sessler says for years - she had trouble sleeping.
"I would blame it on my arthritis and my hip and back hurt. You're just tired all the time you sat down and picked up a pencil and you could easily drop to sleep," said Sessler.
On a normal night - Clare could get two full hours of sleep.
Until a doctor referred her to the Edgerton Hospital and Health Services Sleep Lab, where she was diagnosed with sleep apnea.
This means she has abnormal pauses in breathing - which causes her to wake up.
Registered sleep technologist Diane Reed says there are many people like Clare, living without sleep. This can put your health at risk.
The lab allows patients to sleep the night, to figure out why they're not getting enough sleep.
"We're monitoring movement of eyes, face changes, brainwaves, heart," said Diane Reed, Registered Sleep Technologist.
Once the patient is all hooked up, a sleep technician monitors brainwaves and how the patient is sleeping the entire night," said
"To find out whether its sleep apnea, snoring the cause of bad sleep," said Reed.
As for Clare - she says she's sleeping with a mask to helps her breath properly while sleeping, which changed her life.
If you're interested in going to this sleep lab, you must have a doctor's recommendation.
