MADISON (WMSN) -- The Ronald McDonald Family House has been used by families since 1993. Today, St. Mary's Hospital announced they hope to build the first Ronald McDonald Family Room in the Badger State. This means it will be located inside the hospital.

As one Juneau family told us, this will make a huge difference in families lives, especially for babies born premature.

"It's very hard to leave your child in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and go home every night, even if it's down the road," said Stacey Kuehn, Juneau Resident.

16 months ago, Stacey Kuehn's twin girls were born 13½ weeks premature. They were born at St. Mary's Hospital.

Madyson weighed 2 pounds 1 ounce, and Makayla weighed just 1 pound 14 ounces.

"Madyson was in the hospital 90 days and Makayla was in for 106 days, it was long hours hoping and praying they would grow and get bigger," said Kuehn.

Instead of having to drive an 1½ hours home each night, they were able to stay at the Ronald McDonald House in Madison.

"It was such a wonderful place there. A home away from home," said Kuehn.

Now, a Ronald McDonald Family Room is planned to be built on the third floor of St. Mary's Hospital, steps away from where children are treated.

The 3,500-square-foot construction project includes four sleep rooms with private bathroom for families, and living area complete with a TV and wireless internet.

The Kuehn's say they can't wait to see the drawings become a reality, and are thrilled to be able to show off their girls to the nurses who helped them get better.

"They're doing awesome as you can see they're getting into lots of trouble they're 16 months now, they can walk and keep us busy," said Kuehn.

Before construction begins, $1 million must be raised.
