Breast cancer is the second leading cancer killer of women. The American Institute for Cancer research says daily drinking ups your risk of breast cancer.
Alcohol interferes with the estrogen pathways in multiple ways influencing hormone levels and estrogen receptors. Even one daily drink can equal one too many for some people.
“The point is to try to decrease our risks for cancer,” said Dianne Riley, RD, Clinical Dietitian with St. Mary’s Hospital. “So, if you already have several risk factors for cancer, you want to decrease your risk. Knowing that a daily drink of alcohol will increase your risk, it's best to avoid drinking.
Some risks include:
If you're 60 or older.
If you delivered your first baby after 30.
If you never had a baby.
Family history.
Overweight women.
The more risks you carry the more you need to avoid alcohol. Exercise also helps to bring your risks down.
