MADISON (WMSN) -- Christmas is coming a little early for some newborns at St. Mary's Hospital.

A brand new, state-of-the-art birth center opened Wednesday.

The Pacholke family is one of the families taking their first journey together.

Their daughter Giuliana Rose was born Monday.

Her mother and father appreciate the technology in the new suites.

"In a time when there's so much unknown is wonderful having all of the conveniences of being "at home" right here is great," said Tamara Pacholke, mother of Giuliana.

Starting with the double bed.

"This will be really nice to actually get to sleep in bed with my wife again," said Steve Pacholke, father of Giuliana.

"Years ago, the father couldn't go in delivery room and now we want them all there," said Director Holly Halberslaben.

The director says technology is more advanced.

Each room is equipped with monitors, which includes a vital machine, and oxygen tank.

"Before we had to bring everything into the room so we were making a lot of noise," said Halberslaben.

There's also the convenience of being able to show families how to care for baby.

"We made the sink for the baby, where before we just brought a warmer in and we did a bath in crib," said Halberslaben.

If there is an emergency - a customized alert system is now within arms reach.

"If they want help, and if any staff sees that, they know the patient wants assistance with the baby," said Halberslaben.

The Pacholke family says they feel home, and at ease.

"We're supposed to check out tomorrow, but we're thinking of staying through Friday," joked Tamara Pacholke.

The old unit will be converted into a new NICU unit for premies, set to open at the end of 2011.
