MADISON (WMSN) -- A new medical procedure was used for the very first time in the state at UW Health in Madison.
The state-of-the-art surgery no longer cuts a person open, followed by a long recovery to fix a blood vessel.
Instead, doctors pull a moveable sint into the body starting from the inner thigh. A strong piece of fabric then covers the weakened artery.
71-year-old Anita Penniston was first patient in the state to get the procedure.
"This was a snap. I had some pain the first day after I've been driving. Maybe I'm not supposed to be," said Anita Penniston, UW Health patient.
The alternative for Anita would have been a nearly 3 month recovery, had she opted for regular surgery.
The most common symptoms of an abdominal aortic aneurysm are back pain, or tenderness in the abdomen.
