Madison- Monday, Gary Andersen coached his first preseason practice as head football coach of the Badgers.

The players didn't wear pads, so there wasn't much work done with regard to the running game.  Six quarterbacks are competing for the starting spot, but that appears to be a three-man race between sophomore Joel Stave, senior Curt Phillips, and newcomer Tanner McEvoy.

Coach Andersen gave us his report card for the first day of fall camp.

"The young guys played hard.  They've got to understand how to practice in our tempo and move around the way we do.  But it's a matter of 'want-to.'  It's just a simple matter of learning. I thought the older guys were crisp.  The veterans came out here definitely with a purpose.  Kids were competing up front on both sides of the football.  It's always hard to evaluate the front seven.  Alignment and assignment was clean and crisp, and there was a lot of 'want-to' in the kids."
