Sun Prairie, WI- This weekend marks the beginning of a brand new era of Sun Prairie hockey.  The city will cut the ribbon on a brand new, 94,000 square foot Ice Arena.  It includes two NHL-sized rinks, 14 locker rooms, open concourses, and a dance studio.

The project started 8 years ago, and it has a price tag of $7 million.  Sun Prairie has bounced from rink to rink without a permanent home- but that's all a thing of the past.  Jeff Thornton is President of the Board of Directors for the SP Ice Arena, and he can't wait to drop the puck.

“The first varsity game is Jan 28th.  We open up the first round of the ground hog tournament against Madison Memorial, so one of our arch rivals from the Big 8 a chance to pack the barn here and make it a very loud and intimidating place to play.  Our high school kids have been fantastic- they have been on the road the past six months.  They practice before 5 A.M. kinda all around the city we have been kinda nomads for a while.  And a chance to have them come home and stake this place as their own and make it an intimidating place.  Really looking forward to seeing it.”
