MADISON, Wis. - A new ad campaign launched statewide aims to reduce distracted driving and the number of citations given out.
The ad features two-time national texting champion Austin Wierschke. The Rhinelander native makes fun of the fact that he can text in any situation, but not while driving.
Ad campaigns similar to Wisconsin’s and increased enforcement of texting-while-driving laws have caused handheld phone use to drop 30 percent nationwide.
Randy Romanski, with Wisconsin’s Department of Transportation, said prevention is important.
“Put your phone away so there’s no temptation to text or call. If you’re traveling with somebody, have them make a phone call. If it’s absolutely necessary, pull over to the side of the road,” Romanski said.
April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and Romanski said distractions also include eating or looking around your vehicle for something.
