MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee Alderman Michael Murphy says taxpayers in southeast Wisconsin could be asked to pay a regional sales tax to help fund a new stadium to replace the BMO Harris Bradley Center.
Murphy was one of three panelists Thursday discussing the possibility of a new stadium. The panel was held one day after Herb Kohl sold the Milwaukee Bucks to two New York executives, on the condition they keep the team in Milwaukee. The executives and Kohl committed to providing a total of $200 million to build a new arena, but if private investors don't pick up the rest of the $400 million tab, taxpayers might be asked to.
Murphy acknowledges that sports teams aren't the economic engine they're sometimes touted to be. But he says they bring other intangibles that are worth paying for.Thursday, April 17 2014, 08:09 PM CDT
