Current state law prohibits advertising children for adoption through a number of mediums, including newspapers, radio and television but doesn't address the Internet.
The bill also would require parents who want to transfer their legal parental powers to someone else for more than year to go through a court review and prohibit custody transfers that don't comply with the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children.
The bill's author, Republican Rep. Joel Kleefisch, says the bill is designed to ensure parents don't give unwanted children to strangers without government oversight.
The Assembly passed the bill unanimously Thursday. It goes next to the state Senate.
