MADISON, Wis. -A Cross Plains man was sentenced Tuesday for unlawfully possessing firearms as a convicted felon, according to a state Department of Justice release.

Andrew Scoles, 36, was sentenced to 20 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release, officials said. Scoles pleaded guilty to the charge May 20.

On Dec. 22, 2013, Scoles bought two boxes of Weatherby .300 Magnum ammunition after having previously been convicted of a felony, according to the release. Scoles was convicted on Dec. 3, 2012, in Green County for felony possession of THC.

At the time of the purchase, Scoels was on probation in Green County for a misdemeanor domestic abuse battery and disorderly conduct conviction, and a domestic abuse injunction, both of which also prohibited him from possessing any firearms or ammunition under federal law, according to the release.

Officers searched Scoles’ residence on Jan. 22, 2014, and found 19 firearms and several hundred rounds of ammunition, officials said.

The charge against Scoles was the result of an investigation conducted by the Dane County Sheriff’s Office and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
