MADISON, Wis. - A fire caused approximately $60,000 in damage to a downtown home Tuesday afternoon, according to a release.
Crews responded to the two-story house in the 400 block of Mifflin Street around 3:10 p.m., officials said. Crews observed smoke coming from the roof when they arrived and aggressively attacked the interior to get the fire under control a couple minutes later.
Crews fought much of the fire from the top of the roof by cutting ventilation holes in the roof to let heat and smoke out of the attic space, as well as to remove additional burning materials in the roof, according to the release.
Six people have been displaced, but only one was home at the time of the fire, officials said. The resident said he smelled smoke, and when he went outside a passerby was already calling 911.
No injuries were reported at the scene.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
