MADISON, Wis. - A Wisconsin man accused of fatally running over his 2-year-old son and stabbing the boy's mother has entered a plea deal just as his trial was to begin.
Thirty-two-year-old Jesus Castillo-Dimas pleaded no contest to first-degree reckless homicide Monday for the 2012 death of his son, Yandel Castillo-Castillo.
Castillo-Dimas also pleaded no contest to attempted first-degree intentional homicide for trying to kill his ex-girlfriend, Maria Castillo-Castillo, who was the boy's mother. She survived the attack.
He was facing one count of first-degree intentional homicide, two counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide and a charge of stalking resulting in bodily harm.
Fitchburg police said the woman was in a long-term relationship with Castillo-Dimas that had ended. Castillo-Dimas was the father of the child who died in the incident.
A man was with the boy's mother when the attack happened in the 2100 block of Red Arrow Trail in the Allied Drive neighborhood.
Through a Spanish interpreter, he told the court Castillo-Dimas was a jealous ex-boyfriend looking for revenge. He said Castillo-Dimas waited for the mother and the boy to be in line with the truck, and then floored the gas.
Castillo-Dimas's defense originally said the man suffered from a short-term mental disorder, and that he was unable to understand his actions at the time of the incident.
As part of the plea agreement, Castillo-Dimas abandoned his insanity defense.
Sentencing is set for June 12.
