APPLETON, Wis. - High schools in Appleton are kicking off fundraising for field turf and updated stadiums.

Post-Crescent Media reports the Appleton Area School District's business services committee approved fundraising this week.

School officials say the proposals are designed to increase safety for high school athletes and add facilities and amenities for players and spectators.

Football, soccer, baseball, softball and lacrosse teams could use the synthetic turf fields. Currently, the grass fields at both schools get about 100 hours of use per year. Officials say that number would grow close to 2,000 hours if a turf field is installed.

Construction is planned to begin next summer so the fields are ready for fall sports.
