Habitat For Humanity of Dane County is a couple weeks behind with its construction, thanks to the extreme winter weather.
Habitat spokesperson Cheryl McCullum said the delays don’t just mean challenges for this round of construction, which includes 18 houses in Dane County.
“There's a ripple effect this winter that really affected us here at Habitat,” McCullum said.
McCullum said one of the main challenges with the cold was the frozen ground. Digging foundations took more time than expected, and it was tough to finish up other tasks like landscaping.
Habitat also had to cancel a number of volunteer sessions due to the weather.
“You do feel bad. You get people set up, ready to go, and suddenly due to the weather, you have to cancel,” McCullum said.
McCullum said families plan on moving into their new home at a certain time, and that schedule could be disrupted. On top of that, future projects will probably be pushed back.
“We really wanted to kick off our construction season for the summer April 1, but due to the weather, we're going to have to put that off a couple of weeks,” McCullum said.
McCullum said while having volunteers back out is great, what Habitat really needs are professionals. She said anyone with expertise in roofing, dry wall, or siding, would be a valuable asset for the organization.
“Our homes are smaller, so there's not a lot to do, but we do need some just to catch up,” McCullum said.
