MADISON, Wis. -The U.S. Attorney’s office indicted a Madison man on federal charges in connection with five armed robberies that happened around the city back in April and May.
James Sexton, 34, faces charges of brandishing a firearm during the commission of each robbery that happened between April 29 and May 15.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, the indictment alleges that during two of those robberies, an unknown accomplice sprayed an unknown chemical at employees or patrons of the businesses.
The crimes happened starting at the Pizza Extreme on Monroe Street on April 29. Then they hit Burrito Drive on Brearly Street, Players Sports Bar and Grill on Winnebago Street, Toppers Pizza on Mineral Point Road and Market Basket on Mifflin Street.
Police said Thursday they have a 40-caliber pistol, which they believe is the weapon used in the robberies.
Madison Police Chief Mike Koval said tests to determine what chemical was sprayed during the incidents aren't back yet, but it was some type of irritant.
Sexton faces a maximum penalty of 207 years in federal prison for all of the charges.
Madison police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives worked together on this investigation. Police and the U.S. Attorney’s office will hold a 2 p.m. press conference Thursday to discuss this case.
