Republican leaders were optimistic about Walker’s push for more job training and lower taxes. However, some are already bracing for the debate to come.
“Governor Walker did exactly what the people of Wisconsin want, which is grow a surplus by making real reforms to government,” Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said. “And once the surplus is created we put some in the rainy day fund, and the rest is going to go back in tax relief.”
“I think there’s no real concerns about the property tax cuts. I think that’s viable,” Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said. “The issue is going to be how much you put in the rainy day fund versus the statutory balance.”
Democratic leaders were generally on board with Walker’s investment in hiring people with disabilities and property tax relief. That said, Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca said no one wanted to see an increase in structural deficits. Other representatives thought Walker was painting a rosier picture than what is really the situation in Wisconsin, and wanted more money for areas like education and targeted relief for middle class residents.
“I also think it’s important to invest in our children, and I didn’t hear anything about restoring the massive cuts that were made to K through 12 education,” Rep. Chris Taylor, D-Madison, said.
“Bottom line is we need to start working on jobs, and 37th in the nation is not acceptable,” Rep. Andrew Jorgenson, D-Milton, said. “And to act like it is and everything is going good is just irresponsible in my book.”
