MADISON, Wis. -The Madison Metropolitan School District will be providing free meals during summer vacation through the Summer Food Program, according to a release.

During the school year, MMSD Food and Nutrition serves children who qualify for free or reduced price meals due to low household income, officials said. The summer program offers children nutritious food when school is not in session.

Over 175,000 meals will be served during an eight week session at more than 35 locations, according to the release. Meals will be distributed Monday through Friday starting June 23 and going through Aug. 15 (except July 4).

The Summer Food Service Program is a federally funded program through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, officials said. MMSD offers breakfast, lunch and snacks at qualifying sites. Sites qualify if the school has more than 50 percent free and reduced lunch enrollment, or if more than 50 percent of the children participating at the site qualify for free or reduced price meals.

If the site qualifies all meals are served free to all participants, and no application or registration is required.
