MAZOMANIE, Wis. - Authorities used special tracking equipment to find a missing autistic boy a “significant distance” from his home Saturday afternoon.

The father told police he looked for his son in the area for approximately 20 minutes before calling Dane County dispatch to ask for assistance, officials said.

Deputies determined the missing boy was part of the Dane County Sheriff’s Office Care Trak program, which is designed to locate people with a history or the potential to wander away from their caregiver, according to the release. The program uses a transmitter that is assigned a specific frequency and attached to the client’s wrist. Deputies are then able to use special tracking equipment to assist in locating the person.

Authorities used the tracking equipment, and within an hour, the boy was found a significant distance from his home, officials said. Despite the cold weather, the child did not sustain any weather-related injuries and was returned to his home.

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office Care Trak Program currently serves 48 clients, according to the release. Anyone who is interested in additional information about the program should contact the Dane County Sheriff’s Office.
