The Madison Police Department said on Monday night during the dangerously cold temperatures in Madison, a 27-year-old Madison man was warming up his 1999 Chevy Tahoe on the 2300 block of Cypress Way. The near west Madison man told police the SUV was stolen when he left it unattended for a few minutes.
The next morning, 18-year-old Roberto M. Rodriguez-Sostre of Madison went to American Auto on East Washington Avenue and told employees he had a car to junk.
A worker told police he recognized Rodriguez-Sostre as a man who had sold the business a stolen car in December for $250. Employees told the teen they were calling police and he ran, leaving the black 1999 SUV in the lot.
But it wasn't over.
A short time later, 18-year-old Sorrell A. Gilmore of Madison entered the salvage shop and told workers the Tahoe belonged to his girlfriend. Employees told police Gilmore changed his story a few times, but fled as police were arriving.
Rodriguez-Sostre was taken into custody on East Gorham Street shortly after he fled American Auto, police said. Gilmore was arrested Wednesday.
Police said the victim got the Tahoe back but the stereo and cash from the center console were missing.
Gilmore and Rodriguez-Sostre were each charged with receiving stolen property and on a probation hold, police said.
