MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin Badgers' trip to the Final Four is generating additional revenue for some retailers.
Sales of Wisconsin apparel are brisk this week as the Badgers prepare to take on the University of Kentucky in Arlington, Texas Saturday night.
It has been especially busy at the UW Bookstore on State Street.
Store officials said they’ve bought three times the amount of Final Four gear than they did back in 2000, and they anticipate that this merchandise is going to be the year’s best seller.
“You could tell after the game it was electric. Everyone was so excited. They want to support their team. Everyone feels good. They want to wear what the team wears,” UW Bookstore Collegiate Buyer Angie Maniaci said.
The bookstore is now carrying the “Net-Worthy” shirt that Badgers wore right after they won the Regional Finals on Saturday.
At Campus Street Sportswear in Madison, owner Mike Dunbar says sales are "probably tenfold compared to a regular week."
Sports bars around the state will likely see extra business for the game Saturday. Pooley's Sports Bar owner Geoff Pooley predicts Saturday will be one of his biggest nights of the year. The Madison bar and event center has 38 televisions, including three 65-inch TVs.
The State Journal reported typical Saturday business at Topper's Pizza in Madison usually generates $4,000 to $5,000. Last Saturday when the Badgers advanced, the restaurant did $7,000 in business.
