MADISON, Wis. - The state has agreed to pay more than half a million dollars to the estate of a man who committed suicide four years ago at Mendota Mental Health Institute.
The Wisconsin State Journal reports the mother of 27-year-old Jason M. Peters sued the state alleging Mendota staff was negligent in his care.
Peters strangled himself with a sock in a seclusion room in 2010. The lawsuit alleges that Peters was to be checked on every 15 minutes but staff didn't notice his death for 18 hours.
The state agreed to settle the lawsuit by paying $562,500.
Mary Kennelly is the attorney for Peters' mother, Nancy Barton of Oneida. Kennelly says Barton is "very pleased" with the outcome.
State Department of Justice spokeswoman Dana Brueck declined to comment.Friday, April 11 2014, 03:30 PM CDT
