MADISON, Wis. -Transportation officials say 39 people were killed in Wisconsin traffic crashes last month, the second-lowest figure for a month of July since 1937.

The state Department of Transportation says last month's figure represents 18 fewer deaths than in July of last year, and 19 fewer than the five-year average for the month of July.

The safest July was in 1943, with 34 traffic fatalities.

As of Thursday, 252 people died in Wisconsin traffic crashes this year. That includes 38 motorcycle drivers, four motorcycle passengers, 21 pedestrians and two bicyclists. The total figure represents 31 fewer fatalities than at the same point last year.

Department spokesman David Pabst says one way to reduce traffic deaths is to continue to fight drunken driving. He says 185 people died in alcohol-related crashes last year.
