Concern for athlete concussions is still in the spotlight as UW-Health released a new report suggesting it doesn't matter what brand of helmet you buy for your child. The two year study claims neither specific brands, age nor the recondition status of football helmets were associated with the number of sports-related concussions.
Health experts said helmets are still vitally important to protect athletes out on the field, but said manufacturer's claims that their helmet better protects against concussions just plays on parent's fears.
"So we don't want parents and athletes to have a false sense of security that the helmet is going to absolutely prevent or 100 percent protect them from a concussion," said Alison Brooks, UW- Health Assistant Professor, Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation.
The study followed more than two-thousand football players at 35 high schools across Wisconsin between 2012 and 2013.
