MEDINA, Wis. - Police continue to investigate the death of a Marshall man whose body was recovered in a fiery car crash last month.

The death of Telesforo Dominguez-Gomez, 24, is now being looked at as a possible homicide because of a text message that he sent to his friend before his death, according to court records filed earlier this week.

After confirming a search warrant, investigators said Dominguez-Gomez sent a text message to a friend saying that he had been in a fight earlier in the day. However, other than the message, there was no evidence indicating that Dominguez-Gomez was involved in a fight.

Dominguez-Gomez’s phone records are being pursued by investigators in hopes of finding additional communications that he may have had.

Records dating back to Nov. 1 are being sought to show any history and patterns of communication with anyone about whom investigators may be unaware.

The search warrant says that at this point, no cause of death has been determined, and investigators don't know yet if it's a criminal matter.

Investigators continue to gather information on the fatal vehicle fire and the events leading up to it.

According to the warrant:

The matter began as a missing person investigation on Dec. 14, when Dominguez-Gomez’s sister became concerned when he failed to return home after a night out with several friends.

Using a cellphone mapping program, Dominguez-Gomez’s sister was able to track his phone and located his car off Canal Road in the town of Medina. Dominguez-Gomez’s 2011 Chevrolet Cruze was found crashed and burned, with his remains inside.

Both the mapping program and U.S. Cellular records, received by police, show that Dominguez-Gomez’s phone was last active around 2:35 a.m. Dec. 14.

The warrant says that one of Dominguez-Gomez’s friends told police that at around 1:52 a.m., Dominguez-Gomez sent a text message to him saying, “Dude I got in a fight.” The friend told police that it was not in Dominguez-Gomez’s nature to get into fights.

Dominguez-Gomez and his friends were at MT’s bar in Waterloo the night he died. The friends told police that they left the bar around 1:30 a.m., leaving Dominguez-Gomez talking with an unknown man.

Police were able to track down the man with whom Dominguez-Gomez was last seen talking, and he said there were no problems between them. The bartender and surveillance video at MT’s bar have confirmed that to police.
