MADISON, Wis. - As schools in the area consider cancelling class during the week's cold temperatures, many parents might notice their day cares aren't an option when it comes to housing kids elsewhere.
Like many area day cares, Kids Express Learning Center closes its doors every time Madison's School District does, which is a double whammy for parents looking for a place to house their kids for the day.
"We feel we have to have someone to follow rather than making decision intermittently on our own and on a day-to-day basis," owner Sandy Dahl said. "We have to keep children safe, and that's what really lies behind our decision to close."
The daycare center says its decision is in the best interest of the kids, but Dahl understands the burden it places on parents.
"They have jobs they have to get to, they have stores they have to open, surgeries to perform, they're busy people and we know that," Dahl said. "I think all centers seem to be struggling with the policies."
That's why last year, the school made up for its snow days by cutting teacher prep days.
"What we were doing was trying to help parents get their kids here and keep them here as many days as possible," Dahl said.
Your typical day care may not be a Plan B, but there are other options for those snow days. YMCA says it will open all of its locations at 7 a.m. According to a press release, the cost for all-day care is $35 per child for YMCA facility members and $50 per child from program members. Children must be picked up from the location by 6 p.m.
