MADISON, WI-A Madison dentist hopes to raise money for charities by upcycling dental products that aren’t typically easy to recycle.

Dr. Nicole Andersen, owner of Artisan Dental, said they felt there was a niche in products that are not easily recycled curbside.

Andersen said they collect toothpaste tubes, floss containers, used toothbrushes and mouthwash containers at Artisan Dental. Then they send them to TerraCycle to be turned into products like cutting boards and bath caddies.

“With the TerraCycle program, we’ll get two points for each amount of product that we collect,” Andersen said. “Those two points then translate into money for Feed America and some other charities that they have selected.”

Andersen said they worked with Madison streets and recycling crews, and determined those used items are hard to recycle.

“For us to find this partnership with TerraCycle is really nice in that we can create with them a system for collecting those things and get them out of the curbside recycling program in Madison and send them to TerraCycle,” Andersen said.

Andersen said they have been collecting the used items for about six months, and they have started seeing an increase in donations.

Donations can be dropped off during normal business hours at the Livingston Street dental office.
