MADISON, Wis. - A man who drove drunk and killed a 10-year-old will spend eight years in prison.
Trevor McGuire hit and killed Michael Iverson, of Stoughton, on Oct. 7, 2013. The crash happened on Highway 59 west of Albany. Michael’s family was driving back to Stoughton after a volleyball tournament in Monroe.
In court Tuesday, McGuire gave an emotional apology to Michael's family.
"My actions stole the possibility of Michael becoming a graduate, getting married, having children and doing what he aspired to do in life," McGuire said. "And that is only a fraction of what I honestly took from you."
According to the sheriff's department, McGuire was driving his pickup west on Highway 59 when he crossed the center line and hit the eastbound minivan.
Investigators said they found an open bottle of tequila in McGuire’s truck.
McGuire pleaded no contest to homicide charges in October. He was also sentenced Tuesday to eight years of probation.
