MADISON, Wis. - There's a new group in Madison that's helping people plan and hold environmentally-conscious funerals.

Volunteers said the method takes funerals back to how they were done centuries ago.

“It’s as far from traditional as you can get based on history, it’s the concept of the green cemeteries,” Natural Path Sanctuary coordinator Shedd Farley said. “It’s basically an ashes to ashes, dust to dust, natural kind of burial.”

That means no embalming fluid or finished caskets, and oftentimes the family will dig the grave.

The movement is being put together by a new group called Walking Each Other Home. The group provides after-death kits for loved ones.

There are currently two green cemeteries in the Madison area, one in Barneveld and one in Verona.
