MADISON, Wis. - A Madison police officer was injured when her squad car was hit from behind while she was assisting a motorist on the Beltline early Sunday morning, according to a release.

The officer suffered minor injuries when a pickup truck, being driven by Eduardo Diaz-Martinez, 25, of Madison, hit the squad car from behind going at highway speeds near the High Point Road overpass on the westbound Beltline, officials said.

The force from the crash pushed the squad car into the vehicle belonging to the motorist the officer was helping, according to the release.

Immediately after the crash, Diaz-Martinez fled southbound on foot across the eastbound lanes of the Beltline, over a fence and into a nearby apartment complex, police said. Diaz-Martinez surrendered when officers pursued him.

The injured officer was taken to a hospital, treated and released, officials said.

Diaz-Martinez faces tentative charges of causing injury by operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, resistsing police and hit-and-run to an attended vehicle.
