MADISON, Wis. - Hundreds of people are celebrating the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. at the official state celebration in Madison.
Keynote speaker Anthony "Van" Jones said at Monday's event in the state Capitol that King would support the movement of young black Americans in Wisconsin.
Jones is an author, attorney and president of the organization Rebuild the Dream.
Jones says in his younger days that King could have been a member of an organization like Young, Gifted and Black Coalition in Madison. The group has argued with police over the release of black inmates, racially equal policing and it sought to self-police in some communities.
Gov. Scott Walker attended the event and issued a proclamation at its conclusion recognizing Martin Luther King Day.
