MADISON, Wis. - The 16th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service brought together 370 middle and high school students from Dane County. It also brought together organizations representing a variety of science fields.

“The idea is to get them excited about service,” said Edward Lee, co-chair of the Madison/Dane County Martin Luther King Jr. Coalition.

The program gives students a chance to see the sciences as a creative and fun exploration.

“A lot of times people grow up thinking that science is hard, it is boring and it has nothing to do with my life. None of that is true,” said Mike Randall, outreach coordinator for Wonder of Physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

One of the goals of the program is to engage the students in the science exhibits in the hope it will be the beginning of a lifelong interest in the sciences.

“Every time we see a kid’s face light up there’s that possibility that could be the next Albert Einstein,” Randall said. “I love working with the kids. I love watching their faces light up.”

The daylong program also gives the students the opportunity to interact with students, staff and faculty at UW-Madison.

“Letting them see some role models on a college campus is another sort of great by-product of today,” Lee said.
