On the 30th anniversary of the Madison-Dane County Martin Luther King Jr. coalition developing the idea of bringing a diverse group together to commemorate dream, the holiday observance celebrated one Madison woman's five decades of heath care service.

Madison Mayor Paul Soglin presented African American Community elder and Naval veteran Barbara Nichols, who served as the first African American President of the American Nurses Association, with a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award.

Nichols said the holiday's significance should always be viewed as a day of service.

"As a celebration and a day to reflect and think about where we are with race relations," Nichols said. "Dr. Kings view is in the DNA of America because he talked about poverty. Empowerment of people, education, employment and housing. All issues that are still relevant today."

Nichols said until those gaps are fully dealt with, king's dream cannot be fully realized.
