MADISON, Wis. - A state lawmaker is trying to make the inside of cars safer by proposing an update to the state's car seat law.

Rep. Chris Taylor, D-Madison, wants to change the law so that some children would have to be in rear-facing car seats until the age of 2.

Right now the requirement ends at the age of 1.

The law hasn’t been updated in 14 years, and safety organizations say the law is not up to today’s safety standards.

“Trying to get a law in place is not trying to punish those that don’t want to do it safest, it’s really just trying to keep these kids safe,” Safe Kids Coordinator Nicole Vesely said.

Taylor’s office said she will work on getting bipartisan support before introducing the bill.
