WHTIEWATER, Wis. - Firefighters from several departments responded to a house fire in Whitewater on Friday morning.

The fire broke out shortly before 9 a.m. at a home at 267 S. Cottage St. Whitewater police Capt. Brian Uhl told News 3 a passerby reported the fire.

Emergency crews arrived to find heavy smoke pouring out of the two-story home. The thick smoke made it hard for firefighters to battle the blaze.

The time of day didn't help matters either. Many rural and volunteer departments have members that work out of town during the day, so finding members able to respond can be a challenge. Because of this, the Whitewater Fire Department requested seven alarms for the fire.

Crews from the following departments responded: Fort Atkinson, Palmyra, Janesville, Lauderdale LaGrange, Jefferson, Darien, Elkhorn, Edgerton, Walworth, East Troy, Clinton, Turtle, Eagle, Racine Fire Bells, the Beloit Rehab Trailer and Helenville.

It appears the fire started in the basement of the home before spreading to the first and second floors. The family was out of town when the fire broke out and has been accounted for.
