MILWAUKEE - Twelve of Milwaukee's 15 aldermen are condemning the remarks of a colleague who predicted there would be sexual assaults on streetcars.

The Milwaukee Common Council has signaled most members would be in favor of a $124 million downtown streetcar project, but the final approval isn't set until next month.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that Alderman Joe Dudzik on Friday told WTMJ-AM radio that there would be "a couple of assaults, or maybe a rape or a shooting on one of these streetcars."

In response, the 12 aldermen issued a joint statement, calling Dudzik's statements hurtful, divisive and a scare tactic. The two aldermen who didn't sign are opponents of the streetcar project.

A spokeswoman for Tom Barrett called the statements irresponsible.
