MADISON (WMSN) -- The city of Madison Board of Estimates met Monday night, with members supporting discounted transit rides for small business and funding for crime prevention.

Council members and Mayor Dave Cieslewicz accepted $14,500 from the state of Wisconsin Office of Justice Assistance to crack down on gangs. It's called an Innovative Law Enforcement grant.

Madison is already taking steps to combat gang activity in the city. The council budgeted money for six gang control officers next year, instead of two.

"Now we'll have an opportunity with six gang patrol officers to have an officer in each district," said Mayor Dave Cieslewicz. "This grant will help with resources, especially with young people to keep them out of gangs."

Also at the meeting, the board voted to expand bus fare discounts -- this time to small businesses.

This will allow Metro to enter into contracts with business that employ less than 1,000 people, and allow 90 cent bus rides for their employees.

The mayor says there is no direct cost to the city, but the city will hire one employee to recruit small businesses for the bus fare discounts.

The city has contracts with large employers like the UW, Madison College, and St. Mary's Hospital.
